Benefits of Melanin

Melanin is derived from the melanocyte cells found just below the skin’s surface. Melanin is a a natural substance that gives color to the skin, hair, and the iris eye cells. Some people have more of these cells than others hence the large variations in skin complexion.

Some benefits of high levels of melanin in the body includes protection from the harmful effects of UV rays from the sun, and radiant and youthful looking skin.

According to BBC.com “in 1979 there was a study from Kays Kaidbey and his colleagues in the United States, which found that on average 55% of ultraviolet A rays penetrate Caucasian skin while fewer than 18% get through African-American skin. This is why photoageing is delayed in people with dark skin.”

As for curly/coily hair that’s due to melanin production in the body as well. According to historical beliefs the coily hair is meant to protect those born on the continent of Africa from the harmful effect of the sun. While living in a place with a warm climate the darker skin protects from the UV ray affecting the skin while the coily hair protects against the harmful heat rays penetrating the scalp.

So dark skin is one of the greatest gifts provided by the universe. Embrace and love it!
