The Birkin Bag… Is it an Asset or Liability

It seems as if the famed Hermes, Birkin bags have taken over the spotlight in pop culture. Throughout 2020 not only have we been plagued with the presence of a national pandemic, obnoxious levels of racism stemming from the highest elected office in America that trickles down to the average American, but the ever present conversation of the Hermes Birkin bag has taken over the topic of discussion in many of our convos. The Birkin bag has been one of the most popular topics brought up on The Shade Room this year.

The Birkin has always been a fashion statement but it seems that after Drake mentioned back in 2017 that he’s been collecting Hermes Birkin bags for years for his future wife, that every rapper has been obsessed with gifting their lady a Birkin.

Why is the Birkin bag so popular?

.

Birkin’s are one of the most exclusive luxury hand bags you can own. In order to purchase one there was a time where you had to be added to their illustrious waiting list. The suspense of waiting of course added to the allure of exclusivity. Today, these bags are very rare and hard to find in store. Building relationships with sales associates in one store can more so guarantee the opportunity of purchasing Birkin bag. This is why Yaya Mayweather (Floyd Mayweather’s daughter) inserted her 2 cents after seeing virtually everyone now owning a slew of Birkins. She claimed they must be fake. Which I think might be true to some extent. In 2020 there are more ways to shop other than just going directly to the merchant. In this era people are certified resellers of Birkin bags, Jordans, and everything else that can be difficult to purchase.

The entire conversation initially began after Saweetie (girlfriend to Quavo of The Migos) basically said in a nutshell “if your man ain’t buying you a Birkin bag and paying your bills then send him back to the streets”. The internet went crazy and like wild fire everyone began posting photos of their Birkin bags.

Here’s the irony if owning a bag equates to wealth then I guess I had my chance to ‘stunt’ when I surprisingly found one in my local Salvation Army a few years back. As I perused through racks and picked up a few things I walked over to checkout. Anyone who knows thrift stores know that the quality fashion is normally found behind the register, low and behold there was a black Birkin bag. To my surprise no one in the store understood the excitement I had while checking out the luxury handbag. It was priced at a fraction of the normal $40,000 – $500,000. The bag was priced at only $100 bucks. I wasn’t too knowledgeable on what look for when checking for authenticity, they were rushing us out of the store because they were closing so I said I’d return tomorrow after doing some research at Youtube University .

Of course you guessed it when I went back the bag was gone! Regardless of if I was able or unable to get the bag but I believe the bigger picture is if this bag equates to a high level of wealth why is it constantly found in thrift stores everywhere. People are spending hundreds of thousands on  bag that the average American can fish out of a bin at their local Salvation Army. Since the design never changes anyone can wear one that was purchased 30 years ago and pretend it was purchased last month. At this point is it responsible to describe this bag as  an investment or is it a false sign of wealth and entitlement. I don’t know about you but owning a bag that originally cost upwards of $100,000 that can very well wind up in a thrift store in Newark, NJ doesn’t excite me much. I’d much rather see that money in my account rather than wear it on my arm because it will inevitably depreciate so much that it will eventually wind up in a thrift store in Any Town, USA.
