This black girl is not here for the supposed rumors (being projected by mostly white media outlets) of black women choosing to boycott the Black Panther movie because actor Michael B. Jordan chooses to date outside of his race. In my best Tamar voice ‘You tried it!’  Let’s get this straight black women are NOT boycotting possibly one of the best Marvel studio movies to date.

We’ve been waiting a whole year to go out and support the Black Panther film. We’ve produced blog posts, articles, and some even created youtube commentary in support of the film. Ever since we got word that the film was in production we’ve been supporting. We are not boycotting for something as trivial as Michael B. Jordan’s girlfriend being white. It’s an interesting fact but we are still very much fans of him, the cast of the film and of the Black Panther movie as a whole.

Now it may be true that some black women including myself were curious of MBJ dating preference, since he’s never been photographed in public dating a black woman. Also he’s been checked via black twitter for sending an ‘all lives matter’ tweet during the height of the BLM movement. Instances such as the ones listed above may raise a question ‘Is Michael B. Jordan attracted to black women?’ Black Women everywhere want to feel included an not forgotten about or left out of his awesomeness even if its vicariously through his girlfriend who’s a black woman.

Let’s face it the man is hot *insert fire emoji’* and some black women want to know if he’s single or if they’re even ‘his type’. Just like in the 90’s black women loved Denzel Washington. I can s=distinctly remember on numerous episodes of Martin the character Pam gushing over how much she loved Denzel. Michael B. Jordan is the millennial generation’s Denzel Washington.

Please understand (white media) that the curiosity behind his dating life does not translate to : All black women will boycott the Black Panther movie. That couldn’t be further from the truth in fact there’s not a chance that this will happen. We saw how negatively bad press affected the Birth of a Nation film by actor/producer Nate Parker and we will not allow this small fact to deter us from supporting Black Panther.

Nate Parker’s film debut of Birth of a Nation was sabotaged due to negative media coverage surfacing of him along with a friend allegedly raping a woman during his college years. Although the alleged rape happened years ago Parker couldn’t conduct an interview during his press run of the movie without the interviewer bring ing up the topic. His interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America was cringe worthy, you could visually see the discomfort in his face while she bombarded him with questions regarding the rape.

With such a sensitive topic such as rape being the center of conversation involving him at the time it definitely turned a lot of women off from supporting his film. My assumption is that  ‘certain media outlets’ are trying to distract us from fully supporting the Black Panther film by creating rumors of black women boycotting the film because Jordan’s girlfriend happens to be white. This sorry excuse for a smear campaign will not stop us from supporting Director Ryan Coogler, and actors Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan along with  Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, and WInston Duke. See you at the theatre on February 16th 2018 and probably a few times after that. I’ll more than likely go see the film multiple times.
