When you think NASCAR motor-sport team your mind doesn’t automatically move towards relating that to a black woman. It’s time to update your thinking because Melissa Harville-Lebron is making history by becoming the first African American woman to own her very own NASCAR team. The name of her team is E2 Northeast Motorsport and it’s located in Free-port, New York. The only other black woman to own a motor-sport team was Dr. Evelyn Bethune who owned a charity team for education.

Her team is the first African American/Latino sibling team, and they are the first team to have a Jamaican American driver. Harville said her team was inspired by her sons. “…the team was developed to assist my sons, who wanted to enter competitive motor-sports after they were encouraged by an aspiring driver.”

Some of the challenges Harville faces is the need for authentic sponsorship. “…As the team grows and new opportunities present themselves, the need for authentic sponsorship or an investor increases. We just experiences a sponsor related setback. We look forward to creating community outreach programs, empowerment events and STEM Programs. Across the country our goal is to pay this incredible opportunity forward.”
