Denzel Washington Participates in an HBCU Roundtable to Discuss New Film and More
In an electrifying virtual event that took place on Tuesday, November 19, a group of eight distinguished students from seven prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) had the unique opportunity to engage with the legendary icon, Denzel Washington, one of the stars of the much-anticipated film, “Gladiator II.” The event was adeptly moderated by DJ Jae Murphy, a proud Howard University alumnus.
The round table featured communication and marketing students from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Florida A&M University, Alcorn State University, Norfolk State University and Tennessee State University. Each student was selected based on their academic merits and extracurricular involvement, representing a diverse array of perspectives and disciplines.
This initiative was dedicated to uplifting and cultivating the next generation of artists at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Students had the chance to ask questions directly to Denzel, making the session highly interactive and personal. The questions ranged from asking about his role in Gladiator II to asking for career advice and his plans in film direction after retirement. Denzel responded with thoughtful, motivating answers that resonated deeply with the student attendees.
One student from Norfolk State asked Washington what he took with him after filming “Gladiator II,” referencing Denzel’s viral “I’m leaving here with something” meme from a conversation with Jamie Foxx in 2022, to which Denzel shared that he kept a pair of sandals from the Gladiator II set.
After an insightful and reflective conversation with the students, the round table concluded with closing remarks from Jae Murphy and the students, along with Washington, left feeling empowered, well accomplished, and hopeful, as was made clear by their bright smiles.
