Harlem, NY- Residents of one of the most historically and culturally rich neighborhoods in in the world, Harlem are upset over the push from developers to rename the area. As we know much of New York’s ‘urban’ neighborhoods have been or are being gentrified.
Real estate agents and store owners are attempting to rename parts of Harlem. Specifically the streets between 110th to 125th Streets. They’ve been calling it SoHa, short for South Harlem, they believe this will encourage the trendiness of SoHo.
During a news conference yesterday in Harlem State Senator-Elect Brian Benjamin stated “How dare someone try to rob our culture, and try to act as if we were not here, and create a new name, a new reality as if the clock started when other people showed up?”
One woman said “It’s like a slap in the face to me”. Another woman was quoted saying “We love it and we don’t need another name,”. “Harlem is Harlem all by itself.”
Surprisingly newcomers even admitted to the ‘rename’ being a bad idea.
