Meet the Newark Based Fashion Designer and Vibes After Dark Curator, Zunyda Watson

.

Zunyda Watson is a Newark, NJ based designer, overall creative and curator of Vibes After Dark. We will elaborate more on Vibes After Dark later but first lets talk about how Zunyda scored a seamstress gig working  for Beyoncé.

She learned to sew and make clothes by watching her mother who’s a seamstress.

Watson learned enough from her talented mother, so much so that she was hired for a 2 day, 12 hour gig, as one of the seamstresses on set at the Vmas for Beyonce... Yes, Beyonce!

“Someone knew that I knew how to sew and added me to this email group… and if you don’t answer those emails within 1 minute usually somebody else takes the job…I was hungry so I answered it… and they were like can you come here (to an address) like right now… I got there and signed  a contract with her (Beyonce) name on it…”

This opportunity did not only present itself once but twice.  She scored a second gig to work for Beyonce and when I asked her how she accredited black love as the referral source,“…It was just about that black love and being yourself”.

Zunyda spreads the art of sewing to the youngsters at North Star Academy. She instructs a sewing class to their middle school students, she explained “…I’m mostly working with the students who want to be more hands on. And informing the students about the job possibilities in fashion like: production, set design… It’s been a learning experience for me and them because they have no prior experience so I’m really teaching them from scratch and going with that I can…”

.

Zunyda says she sees her brand growing more into a boutique style business as opposed to becoming a big brand in the below  quote.

.

“I would love to be a big brand but I also like being hands on so I think I would like to be a boutique brand who yes has celebrity clients but it’s more like a niche because its not for everybody…”

Now let’s talk about Vibes After Dark.

This 23 year old is the curator of Vibes After Dark– a night market that takes place in Newark every couple of months. The market usually starts before 7pm and lasts well after midnight.

The night market offers a place for unique vendors such as designers, crystal jewelry makers, artist and other creatives to sell their one of a kind pieces to the attendees and to one another.

There’s usually a live performance, a dj and just overall a night full of ‘Lit’ vibes.

Cool right? I know!

“We started that… we both separately had the idea but together it made more sense…we just started and didn’t know where it would go but put our money together.”

“We curate the music programming and djs… as a black person we like to have fun and enjoy our selves you don’t want an upiddy event… I wanted to make it comfortable and inter-generational…”

The next Vibes After Dark will take place in January 2017. If you are in in attending or possibly being a vendor check out their facebook page at facebook.com/vibesafterdark or their instagram page @vibesafterdark.
