Newark Native Talks About her Experience as an Interior Designer

There’s an old saying that goes ‘home is where the heart is‘. I am a firm believer that one of your most important investments in life will be where you go at the end of each day to relax and recharge. Not only the purchase of your home but the time and money you invest transforming your house to function and feel like your personal space.

.

.

Alicia Bailey aka @Interiorista_baileyli is a Newark native who uses her creativity of revamping spaces to reflect the passion of her clients. Alicia has been featured on XONecole.com, Ebony.com, in Essence Magazine, Architectural Digest, on PBS, on NBC (look below), on VOGUE.com, and the list goes on. Most would describe her area of work as interior design but she calls it something else.

.

.

.

.

“I honestly found nothing about the world of interior design to be attractive. My world is less about interior design and more about creativity, Intuition, pushing boundaries and forcing people to recognize who they truly are. Make no mistake “How you live is who You are.””

If you’re familiar with the Northern New Jersey area then you might’ve seen her work at some of the swankiest retail locations. Some of of her most notable projects include include Bella Nail Lounge & Spa (Newark), the Blueprint Cafe (Newark), Closet Savvy Boutique (Newark), and The Presence Atlier (Orange).  To my surprise Bailey told me one of her most memorable projects was not among the cluster of commercial locations but a residential living room where she nearly died while hand painting an 18 ft. wall.

.

.

.

.

.

“A living room that I designed for a client in which I hand painted an 18ft abstract accent wall. The project ended up on NBC’s open house TV on channel 4. What most don’t know is that I literally risked my life while hand painting that entire wall from a 14 foot ladder. I almost fell a few times and I remember imagining the headlines “designer falls to her death hand painting clients wall” and I thought to myself I can live or die with that! Lol that’s when I knew that I was not only insane but that I was doing what I am meant to do because if I’m willing to die for it then clearly nothing’s gonna stop this passion from raging inside of me. “

After viewing her work it’s safe to say Bailey has an eye for transforming interior spaces. I asked her where she draws her inspiration and she told me her clients are her muses.

.

.

.

.

“My clients are my muses; I take the time to get to know what drives and inspires them. I’m inspired by other people’s passions, I love observing a person ignited by something that genuinely brings them joy. I just feel that we all possess such untapped brilliance and I’m motivated to help cultivate and curate spaces that help people get in touch with that.”

.

.

According to our standards Bailey is indeed an Urban Girl Boss but she told us this career like many is not for the faint of heart.

.

.

.

.

.

“If interior design is not a passion of yours then I wouldn’t recommend it as a career. I am a firm believer that we should all be in constant pursuit of what we love. Find those things you’d do regardless of wether you were paid to do them and then find a way to be paid for them. This career is challenging, time consuming and requires a lot of hard work and patience; you need to love it in order to be successful at it.”
