4 Ways Aaliyah Changed the Game as an Urban Girl Boss

Today marks the 16th year anniversary death of the late and great music artist and entertainer Aaliyah. Although the music industry and fans all over the world misses her deeply we’re paying homage to how she single handedly has changed the music game. Read below to find out!

.

Trend Setter– Aaliyah was well known for having her own style. She took the girly tom boy style to a new level, and had girls all over the world wearing baggy pants with sleek crop tops.

.

.

She was born in Brooklyn but raised in Detroit, Michigan– Aaliyah was born in the popular NYC borough of Brooklyn, NY. Her family later moved to the home city of Motown records, Detroit, Michigan where she was raised and found her love of music.

.

She made being mysterious cool– Aaliyah made the idea of her being mysterious and hiding behind her dark shades and/or keeping her left eye covered using her hair. Her mysterious persona kept the world guessing and made everyone have a desire to get to know more about her. She never revealed too much skin and always kept just enough covered.

Matching her choreography with her music– Now, I know Aaliyah wasn’t the first to do this but her song ‘Are you that somebody’ had young girls every where (including myself) all trying to learn every move. Aaliyah made dance an integral part of her music career and definitely raised the bar during the 90’s and 2000’s in the r and b genre.

Intertwining r and b with hip hop & pop– Aaliyah  was not the first to do so but she definitely made an iconic statement within the r and b music community with her unique sound. Although she was an r and b artist her music was often upbeat and something you could dance to. Groups like TLC, SWV and others did similar but Aaliyah was a solo act making an imprint all on her own.
